Great Performances in 2016 at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College delivers a full calendar of fine art, music, theatre and dance events this winter and spring.

FINE ART
Artists Mara Metcalf and Maria Napolitano, whose works are part of the permanent collection of the RISD Museum, open a duet exhibit at Bannister Gallery on Thursday, Jan. 21, titled “If It’s Not You, It’s Me.” Napolitano’s work is inspired by the elusive and curious qualities of the natural world and the fragile connections between nature and human existence. Metcalf employs abstraction to suggest physical worlds that are ever in flux. An artists’ reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m. The exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 12. All Bannister exhibits are free and open to the public.

A simultaneous exhibit that is also running from Jan. 21 through Feb. 12 is the sculptural works of Blake Hiltunen at The Chazen Family Gallery in Alex and Ani Hall. Hiltunen applies materials and processes found in nature to his sculpture.

Bannister Gallery’s RISCA Fellowship Exhibition will be mounted from Feb. 23 through March 25, featuring the work of artists who recently attended residency fellowship programs funded by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. A talk with the artists and a closing reception take place on Wednesday, March 25, at 6 p.m.

The Chazan Family Gallery presents a “Printmaking Exhibition” from Feb. 25 through March 25, and the paintings of Andrée Luduc from March 31 through April 22. Luduc’s paintings explore the tension between knowing and not knowing precisely what one is seeing in nature.

Cultural exploration and personal identity in art and life is the focal point of “Chronicles,” Juan Ormaza’s work on view at Bannister Gallery from April 7-29, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 7, at 5 p.m.

Rhode Island College’s Department of Art also champions its student artists. From April 28 through May 27 RIC graduate student Julie York will present her own “Media Studies Graduate Thesis Exhibition” in The Chazan Family Gallery; and from May 5-20 the “Graduate and Undergraduate Exhibitions” will be unveiled in Bannister Gallery. The latter show includes an artists’ reception on Thursday, May 12, at 5 p.m.

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES

The Performing Arts Series’ winter/spring season opens with an ensemble that has become a tradition at RIC – the Muir String Quartet. On Monday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall, the Muir performs Haydn’s StringQuartet in GMajor, Op. 77, No. 1;Villa-Lobos’StringQuartet No. 5; and Beethoven’s String QuartetNo. 14 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 131. (Admission $35.)

The lineup also includes a production by the Salzburg Marionette Theater, featuring “Peter and the Wolf” and “Little Red Riding Hood,” on Monday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall Auditorium. (Admission $35.)

“Love, Lust, Fear & Freedom: The Songs of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen,” a production by cabaret artist Lauren Fox, takes place on Wednesday, March 23. Through stories and songs, Fox will explore the creative genius and conflicted desires of two of folk music’s most enduring artists. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall. (Admission $35.)

An encore performance by the Muir String Quartet will be presented on Monday, April 4, and feature guest artist Edwin Barker on bass. Classical works on the program are Beethoven’s String Trio in C Minor, Op. 9, No. 3; Berg’sStringQuartet, Op. 3; and Dvořák’sStringQuintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 77. This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall. (Admission $35.)

The Performing Arts Series’ season ends on Thursday, April 21, with Decadancetheatre, an international hip-hop dance/theatre company that brings the voices of a global generation to the stage. Performers are from France, Japan, Nigeria, Norway and the United Kingdom. Performance time is 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall Auditorium. (Admission $35.)

THEATRE

RIC Mainstage Theatre consists of a cast of RIC student artists whose 2015 production of “Godspell” is being featured at the 2016 American College Theatre Festival. A benefit performance will be held for Rhode Islanders in Roberts Hall Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 23 (admission $50).

From Feb. 17-21, the troupe stages William Inge’s “Picnic” in the intimate performance space of the Forman Theatre (admission $15).

From April 14-17 Mainstage presents the musical “Good News” in Roberts Hall Auditorium (admission $20).

Finally, RIC Growing Stage Theatre presents Marsha Norman’s “Night Mother” from March 18-20 in the Forman Theatre (suggested donation $5).

DANCE

Winter/spring programming by the RIC Dance Company opens with the “Spring Dance Concert” Feb. 12-14 in Sapinsley Hall. Student dancers perform works by Keigwin + Company, Tommy Neglett, William Evans, Jessica Pearson and A’Keitha Carey. (Admission $15.)

From March 31 to April 1, the company will host the “Guest Artist Show,” featuring professional dancers Alberto Denis of the New York-based Third Rail Projects, and Don Halquist and William Evans of Bill Evans Dance. Performance time is 7:30 p.m. in the Forman Theatre. (Admission $15.)

RIC’s dance season ends with the “Student Choreography Concert” on April 28-29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Forman Theatre. (Admission $15).

MUSIC

Wednesday Masterworks Concerts, led by internationally renowned composer/pianist and RIC artist-in-residence Judith Lynn Stillman, are slated for February and April.

* On Feb. 17 “Winter Winds” will feature Stillman on piano with RIC Associate Professors of Music Ian Greitzer on clarinet and Mary Ellen Kregler on flute.
* On April 20 “Spring Mix” will feature RIC music faculty members and friends.

All Masterworks Concerts begin at 1 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall, with tickets at the door (suggested donation $10).
