Common Questions Victim’s Have

After an Accident

There are over five million car accidents occurring on U.S. roads each year. Some of these accidents are preventable. A car wreck can send a person’s life into chaos in a short period. Many of us haven’t been in a car accident and might not know what the correct steps are right after being involved in one. Knowing what to do and what not to do can help save you a lot of time and money in the future.

Here are some common questions people have after an accident.

What do I do first after an accident?

The first thing you should is to check on the other passengers and drivers to see the extent of their injuries, as well as look at yours. Do not settle things on the spot with the other driver; injuries can take days or even weeks to be noticed. No matter how minor an accident maybe, you should contact medical assistance and the police as soon as possible. Getting the police involved will help document the scene and allow for an investigation of the scene of the accident. An officer will talk to you about moving your vehicle, and another will take everyone’s statements.

What information do I need to collect?

  • Drivers’ names of all vehicles involved
  • License numbers, address, phone number, insurance companies and policy numbers
  • License plate number, color, make, year and model of all cars involved in the wreck
  • Full name, address and phone number of all occupants in the vehicles as well as pedestrians or witnesses nearby
  • Police officer’s name, department and badge number
  • Actual location of the accident

Have a smartphone to take pictures can be especially helpful so that you have accurate information and have less of a chance of losing it.

Do I need an attorney?

Getting an attorney is not required after a car accident, but can be extremely helpful. Talking to an experienced car accident attorney can help set your mind at ease after being involved in a car wreck. An attorney will be able to tell you what you should or shouldn’t say to protect your interests. If there is a settlement after the accident, your attorney is the one that will negotiate on your behalf. Having a knowledgeable law firm on your side can make the difference between not being able to get your life back on track and getting a settlement to pay for your expenses.

Providence Schools to Expand Dual Language Immersion Program

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Public School Department is pleased to announce the expansion of its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, currently only offered at the Leviton Dual Language School.  Beginning during the 2016-2017 school year, two new DLI classrooms will offer Spanish-English and Mandarin Chinese-English immersion (pending sufficient demand) at the Carl Lauro Elementary School. In dual language immersion, students, starting in kindergarten, receive instruction in two languages so they can become fluent and read in both languages by the time they finish 5th grade.

“In an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, being able to understand, speak, read and write in a second language is a critical 21st century skill,” said Providence Schools Superintendent Christopher Maher.  “That’s why we are thrilled to be expanding our dual language immersion offerings to Carl Lauro Elementary, and encourage parents enrolling their kindergartners for next school year to apply for this great program.”

With an extensive annual waiting list for enrollment at the Leviton Dual Language School, the district sought additional parent feedback on ways to expand DLI offerings.  In the fall, Providence Schools surveyed parents of children who will be entering kindergarten during the 2016-2017 school year.  Survey results showed overwhelming support for expanding DLI programs into more schools, and strong support for Spanish-English and Mandarin Chinese-English language immersion options.

To accommodate this strong demand for DLI, Providence Schools developed the plan to add the two new DLI classrooms at Carl Lauro Elementary.  The district will be able to draw from existing Spanish and Mandarin Chinese speaking teachers to offer these new DLI options.  While the Mandarin Chinese-English classroom is dependent on sufficient parent demand during the kindergarten registration process, survey results indicate strong support for the option.

Kindergarten enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year began on December 1st and registration dates are available through March 14, 2016.  Parents will have the option to note a preference for enrolling their child into DLI classrooms at both the Leviton and Carl Lauro elementary schools.  Parents seeking more information about kindergarten registration dates and options are encouraged to call 401-456-9297 or visit www.providenceschools.org.

RHODE ISLAND – A Family Service of Rhode Island Walking School Bus route was led (Tuesday, November 10, 2015) by a number of rabbis, including the president of the Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island.
Joining the rabbis was Providence School Superintendent Chris Maher.
The Walking School Bus program, created by Family Service of Rhode Island in 2012, currently provides supervised walking routes at Bailey, D’Abate, Fogarty, Kizarian, Lima and Young/Woods elementary schools in Providence. The program serves students not eligible to take the bus because they live within a mile of school.
The rabbis and superintendent participated in a route for Fogarty Elementary on Oxford Street in the South Providence neighborhood. Family Service of Rhode Island launched the Walking School Bus program in 2012 at Fogarty because data showed that most of the school’s families with attendance issues lived a relatively short distance from school. Barriers to attendance included health, parental work schedules, and other issues.
Margaret Holland McDuff, Family Service of Rhode Island CEO, thanked the rabbis and School Superintendent Maher for their support. “Having the support of these community leaders will help us grow the Walking School Bus to serve more and more children,” she said.  “We are hoping to continue to build upon our volunteer base.”  There were 37 volunteers during the last school year.
“We deeply appreciate the commitment of these respected Providence rabbis in supporting the Walking School Bus program and our efforts to reduce chronic student absenteeism,” said Superintendent Maher. “Dedicated community partners like these, willing to generously give of their time, are essential to supporting Providence schools as we work to provide a great education for all of our students.”
Rabbi Sarah Mack, of Temple Beth-El, Providence, and president of the Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island, said, “The Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island is so pleased to support the Walking School Bus program as a reflection of our tradition’s commitment to social justice.  We look forward to sharing this opportunity with our communities and recognize that each step we take this morning is holy as we work to repair the world.”
She was joined this morning by Rabbi Barry Dolinger, of Providence’s Congregation Beth Sholom, who noted that the Walking School Bus is “the kind of project that is creative and strategic, working to change paradigms, but also to break down barriers and build human connections in the process.  It’s beautiful and inspiring, and I can’t wait to get more involved and share it with our community.”
Also participating was Rabbi Elan Babchuck of Temple Emanu-El in Providence. “Temple Emanu-El is thrilled to be a part of this important Walking School Bus initiative!” he said. “We’re grateful that Family Service of Rhode Island created this program, as it gives our broader community the opportunity to put our values into practice. Most importantly, we hope that this is only the beginning of a long and sustained relationship, and that our communities will strengthen our ties over time, as well.”
Ms. Holland McDuff noted that the rabbis are participants in Family Service of Rhode Island’s “Partners In Service” (PINS) program, that links faith communities, businesses and others in the community to support families in crisis being served by the agency’s Family Care Community Partnerships program staff.  “We are most grateful that the rabbis are expanding their partnership with Family Service of Rhode Island to heighten assistance to children and families in need.”
