R.I. Educators Collaborate at 7th Annual Excellence in Education Conference

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – More than 175 educators and charter public school leaders from across the state attended the 7th Annual Excellence in Education Conference hosted by the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools on Tuesday, March 10, focused on sharing best practices in education.

The free conference featured 16 innovative work sessions designed by educators, for educators, on on a wide-range of topics, including integration of the arts, social-emotional learning, digital learning, cultural learning, project-based learning and more. Work sessions were held in various formats, including hands-on sessions encouraging active participation and collaborative work, “smackdowns” featuring short presentations by each participant, facilitated panel discussions and lecture-style presentations, all designed to support collaboration.

Sessions such as, “Racial Identity and Social Justice through the Arts,” lead by Victor Terry, 6th grade Teaching Partner at Segue Institute for Learning, provided teachers with strategies on ways art can be used to connect with students and initiate conversations about racial identity and social justice.

Other sessions such as, “Literacy Strategies for Any Content Area” lead by Carlton Bradshaw, Literacy Reading Coach at Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter High School and Beacon Charter High School for the Arts, used a rotating station format so attending educators could share best practice literacy strategies that could be used at any age level or in any content area.

“Charter public schools are strive to be innovative, and share the best practices we develop,” Said Steve Nardelli, executive director of the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools. “This conference provides school teachers, administrators and staff the opportunity to come together to share ideas, discuss challenges and brainstorm new, creative approaches to everyday practices.”

The 2015 Excellence in Education Conference was funding through a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation.
