Local Scouts Complete the “50 Miler”

Local Scouts recently completed a 50 mile hiking excursion through parts of Rhode Island and Connecticut. The week long backpacking trip began April 19th, at Burlingame State Park, and ended April 25th, at Camp Yawgoog. The group of eight Scouts from units in Middletown, Cumberland, and Somerset were joined by six adult volunteer leaders.

The group traveled approximately 11 miles each day during the seven day, six night adventure.  The trip consisted of high intensity hiking with many adventures and obstacles along the way.

“The primary goal for this trip is to promote healthy behavior, such as, physical fitness, self-reliance, and a practical understanding of conservation,” said John Mosby, Scout Executive of the Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  “We want Scouts to return from this journey feeling like they have achieved the impossible, ready for the next steps in life.”

During the trek, Scouts had the opportunity to earn their “50 Miler Award” by completing at least 10 hours of service projects.  These projects were designed to teach the importance of working together to help the natural world. Other activities included: fly fishing, horseback riding, and sightseeing.

Scouts arrived at their final destination, Camp Yawgoog, where they had the chance to experience many more activities. One activity included: black-powder shooting, under proper supervision.  Scouts and leaders also had time to reflect upon their trip while enjoying a barbeque to close out the week.

“Camp Yawgoog, the country’s second oldest Boy Scout camp was the perfect place to end the trip,” said Mosby. “The camp has been home to Scouts since 1916, carrying so much history and emotions.”
