Shape Up Rhode Island Launches 10th Annual Community-Based Physical Activity Challenge March 23rd

PROVIDENCE, RI— ShapeUp, the leading global provider of holistic well-being solutions, announced today that Shape Up RI is launching its tenth annual statewide competition. Race Around Rhode Island is a 10-week virtual journey around the state, beginning on March 23, 2015 and concluding on May 31, 2015. Teams of community members and local employees will work together to log as many steps as possible, virtually traveling from one Ocean State city to the next, in an effort to compete and increase their physical activity. Along the way, participants will see local sites, learn about healthy activities, and earn discounts at retailers around the state.

“It’s amazing to think that over the past nine years more than 250 companies and 80,000 individuals have participated in Shape Up RI’s evidence-based program, walking millions of miles, losing tens of thousands of pounds, and proving that teamwork is a powerful prescription for taking control of one’s health,” said Rajiv Kumar, co-founder and CEO of ShapeUp. “Serving the local community has always been at the heart of our business and has enabled the continued success of Shape Up RI.”

The Race Around Rhode Island challenge registration is open, and those who are interested in signing up for the event can visit http://www.members.shapeupri.org/. There, teams can track their activity and trace their progress along a virtual map of Rhode Island. Participants will be encouraged to walk a total of 10,000 steps per day in an effort to reach all ten destinations in the allotted ten weeks.

The challenge will feature imagery of Rhode Island, provide exciting information about the state’s history, and offer fun and healthy places to visit, as well as discounts at local vendors. Each time a participant reaches a new destination on the map, a page containing information about that town or city and what it has to offer will be unlocked. Participants will travel through the following cities on their journey: Cumberland, Burrillville, Coventry, Westerly, South Kingstown, East Greenwich, Newport, Bristol, Barrington, Pawtucket, and Providence.

Not only is joining Race Around Rhode Island an investment in health and wellness, it is also a way for community members to work together towards a common goal: to walk as much as possible.  Every participant will receive year-round access to the Shape Up RI platform, admission to free healthy events, and the opportunity to win prizes.
