The Tavern On Broadway Opens In Newport: Local Owners Renovate 200 year-old former Colonial Tavern Building

NEWPORT, RI:  The Tavern on Broadway, a new American Grill-style restaurant and bar located at 16 Broadway in Newport, has opened for business serving lunch and dinner daily and brunch on Sunday.

Located in the historic Washington Square district, The Tavern on Broadway is housed in a completely remodeled building built circa 1815 that formerly housed the Colonial Tavern. Owners Jim Blumel and Jill Terita, residents of Newport, purchased the property in 2011 and spent over a year tearing down and renovating the space into what is now their new restaurant. The Tavern has 22 employees ranging from kitchen and bar personnel to waitstaff.

A summa cum laude graduate of the culinary arts college at Johnson & Wales University and former California resident, Terita developed the menu which combines her love of fresh, local ingredients with the comfort of traditional tavern-style dining. The result is an unpretentious, ‘scratch kitchen’ menu of delicious appetizers, salads, charcuterie, California-style pizza, and steaks, chops
and seafood entrees – not to mention dessert. Signature cocktails and a full bar
are also on the menu.

Blumel designed The Tavern’s pub-inspired layout and oversaw all of the renovations. He has created an elegant, charming ambiance that capitalizes on the aesthetic beauty of the space featuring details such as restored brick walls, wainscoting, warm woods and modern lighting accents such as backlit glass pieces and a chandelier.

Blumel and Terita are also the proprietors of Sunnyside Deli at 12 Broadway, which they opened to much success in 2012.

Business hours are Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 am, and The Tavern on Broadway is open for Sunday brunch. Half-priced appetizers and pizzas are offered daily from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the bar only. Phone: 401.619.5675 for reservations.
