Rhode Islander’s Invited to Fish for a Cause as Part of 1st Annual Galilee Fishing Tournament and Seafood Festival

PROVIDENCE, RI (August 23, 2012) – The Town of Narragansett, the Department of Environmental Management, and the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association announced today that the First Annual Galilee Fishing for a Cause Tournament and Seafood Festival will be held on September 7, 8, and 9 in the Port of Galilee.

The tournament and festival will celebrate and promoteRhode Island’s recreational and commercial fishing industries, locally-harvested seafood and thePortofGalilee. Proceeds will be donated to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Narragansett Parks and Recreation Financial Aid Program, and the Jonnycake Center of Peacedale.

According to DEM Director Janet Coit, “The Port is a significant economic asset to the state as a major hub for recreational and commercial fishing and a popular tourist destination.  The event will highlight many of the businesses that contribute to the unique and historic character of Galilee.”

The fishing tournament begins on Friday September 7, at 5 p.m. Winners will be determined by fish category and weight and awards will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday. RISAA President Steve Medeiros says, “We’ve designed the tournament to be family friendly with low entry fees and award categories for both children and adults. The Rhode Island fishing industry has also stepped up to the plate by donating some terrific prizes, including high value private fishing charters, show tickets and quality fishing tackle.”  More information about the tournament is available on the event website at: http://www.galileetourney.com/tourney/tourney.html.

The festival will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will feature local seafood, artisans, music, and educational exhibits. Galilee businesses will also offer tours of commercial fishing vessels and fish processing plants and demonstrate on water safety skills. Steve Wright, NarragansettParkand Recreation Director says, “Additional vendors, artisans and educators are welcome. We are especially interested in promoting Rhode Island made or harvested products.”
