Plan Now for RI STATEWIDE READ DAY “Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?”

PROVIDENCE, RI (August 28, 2012) – Registration is now open for youth programs to sign up to participate in a unique event of synergy in celebrating good health for children. Being planned for Monday, March 11th, as part of the recognition of National Nutrition Month, schools and youth programs will commit to reading aloud from RI author, Joy Feldman’s book, “Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?” Once a location has signed up, local celebrities, parents, faculty and officials can be recruited to read in classrooms and at events. The statewide READ DAY is suitable for schools, libraries, youth programs and any other group that may want to join in the simultaneous reading which delivers the important message to young children that “they are what they eat”.
Joy Feldman, RI author and nutritional consultant is planning the event as a holistic act of positive community energy, with the goal of having the smallest state in the union have the biggest heart in participation. Feldman reads from her book “Is Your Hair Made Of Donuts?” throughout RI and the United States. Known for her trademark two-foot high donut hat, which she uses to capture the attention of children to deliver her powerful message of healthy eating, Feldman says, “In addition to calling attention to the ever-increasing childhood obesity epidemic the all-state read demonstrates a joint act of support on behalf of our young people. Our READ DAY is something all educational institutions, non-profits, libraries, and community health centers can do to encourage children’s interest in learning more about healthy
eating. The all-state read aloud for children is targeted for children from preschool through grades 5/6.” Feldman, an East Greenwich resident, is the author of “Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?” and “Joyful Cooking in the Pursuit of Good Health”.
Some special readers already secured to read are: RI Department of Health Director Dr. Michael Fine, and staff; Cranston Mayor Alan Fung; and NBC10 reporter Molly O’Brien. Registered to date are Dr. Daycare Centers in Pawtucket, Cumberland, Foster, Smithfield and North Smithfield; RI School for the Deaf, Prov., Oakland Beach Elementary, Warwick; Harmony Public Library, Foster; Woonsocket Public Library; East Greenwich Free Library; Wawaloam Elementary School and Exeter Public Library, Exeter; Blackstone Valley Community Health, Pawtucket; and the YMCAs in Pawtucket and Providence.
Feldman announced that schools and programs who register by October 1st will be eligible to win a special “Is Your Hair Made Of Donuts?” health package of books and other educational items. The only cost to participation is the purchase of one book for reading purposes.
