PCL to Host Hispanic Arts and Book Festival: Feria del Libro y las Artes de Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lovers of Hispanic arts and literature will be heading to Providence Community Library (PCL) on October 3-5 for Feria del Libro y las Artes de Providence, an event featuring books, poetry, storytelling and creative workshops with authors and artists from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York State, New Jersey, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and all over the Latin American world.

Keynote speaker will be Dominican writer and feminist Ángela Hernández Núñez, who will talk about “Las Zonas Insoluble en la Vida de las Poetas (Insoluble areas in the lives of poets)”. The author will be signing copies of her latest novel “Leona o la Fiera Vida (Leona or the Proud Life)”, which she is currently promoting in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Another well-known Dominican writer, the New York based Diógenes Abreu, will discuss and sign copies of his latest book “Sin Haitianidad no hay Domenicanidad (There is no Dominican identity without Haitian identity)” and poet Edgar Smith (author of “Island Boy”) will also autograph works. Dominican poet César Sánchez Beras will read short stories and poems for children.

Visual arts also will be well represented at Feria del Libro y las Artes de Providence, which takes place during National Hispanic Heritage Month. The Ecuadorian artist Ildefonso “Poncho” Franco will lead several interactive arts workshops and there will be folk dancing and a wide variety of performances aimed at both adults and children.

Feria del Libro will take place October 3-5, 2014 at South Providence Library, 441 Prairie Avenue. Admission is free. A welcome reception will begin on Friday, October 3 at 5:00pm. Feria del Libro has been made possible due to generous support from Providence Community Library, a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and sponsorship from Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.
