Narragansett Council, BSA to hold Fishing Derby to Help Get Youth “Hooked on Scouting”

NARRAGANSETT, RI – The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America is gearing up for two upcoming “Hooked on Scouting” Fishing Derbies.  The derbies will take place at Little Ninigret Pond in Charlestown on Oct. 25th, from 12-2pm and at Olney Pond in Lincoln Woods on Nov. 1stfrom 12-2pm.

During the event, Scouts will have the opportunity to learn how to tie a fishing knot, set up a hook and bobber and cast a line.  They will also learn the rules of fishing, fish identification and handling, and the catch and release method.

“Our theme for recruiting new youth this year is ‘Hooked on Scouting’,” said John Mosby, Narragansett Council, Scout Executive/CEO. “The purpose of these derbies is to help acquaint new members and their families with Scouting.”

Scouts are encouraged to invite friends who are not involved in the Scouting program to get them ‘Hooked on Scouting’ as well.

“Not only do these derbies bring Scouts together for a fun-filled day of fishing, competition and prizes, it also teaches the importance of hard work and camaraderie – principles that are very important to Scouting,” added Mosby.

Scouts who participate will earn an event patch.  Poles, bait, and other fishing supplies will be provided.
