Kohl’s Cares Program Celebrates Decade of Helping Hasbro Children’s Hospital and More than $1 Million in Contributions with Continuing Support

PROVIDENCE, RI – For the last ten years, Kohl’s has been a dedicated partner of Hasbro Children’s Hospital, raising more than $1.3 million for the area’s premier pediatric facility through its Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program While the socially-conscious company’s financial generosity has been instrumental to the hospital’s Injury Prevention Center, the impact of Kohl’s support extends far beyond monetary gifts.

Kohl’s commitment to Hasbro Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys, where 100 percent of net profit benefits children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Throughout the country, Kohl’s has raised more than $257 million through this merchandise program.

One of the initiatives, Kohl’s Cares—Kids on the Go, reached thousands of Rhode Island families in 2014. Highlighted by more than 80 community events, many of which were held at local Kohl’s stores and hundreds of safety check appointments at Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s car seat fitting station, the hospital inspected the installation of 2,479 children’s car seats. The hospital identified that just over 1,000 car seats had some level of incorrect use.

Additionally, funds granted by Kohl’s made it possible for Hasbro Children’s Hospital to purchase and distribute 1,608 car seats to low-income parents and families during the past year. Along with receiving a car seat, families benefited from an educational meeting, learning how to properly install the seat in their vehicle and adjust its safety harness as their child grows. Following each appointment, families also took part in a brief research survey, helping the hospital further enhance the program to meet community needs. The most telling statistic revealed that just 12 percent of respondents rated their car seat knowledge as strong before their appointment versus 68 percent afterwards.

“The need for these services is huge; without the support of Kohl’s, we wouldn’t have been able to reach the number of families we helped,” said Dina Morrissey, MD, Research Associate for The Injury Prevention Center and Coordinator of Safe Kids Rhode Island. “Kohl’s is not only committed to these efforts as a company, their associates are instrumental in volunteering at the events to work directly with members of the community; this is a program that has been growing steadily for years.”
