HITEP Designated as a “Bright Spot” by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

PROVIDENCE, RI – HITEP, a vocational school serving the Hispanic Community in the fields of nursing, customer service, job development and computer skills, is pleased to announce that the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (WHIEEH) has designated the company a ‘Bright Spot.’ HITEP was one of more than 230 institutions in the United States to receive this designation and the only company in Rhode Island.

The WHIEEH seeks to leverage these Bright Spots to encourage collaboration between stakeholders focused on similar issues in sharing data-driven approaches, promising practices, peer advice and effective partnerships, ultimately resulting in increased support for the educational attainment of the Hispanic community.

“We are humbled to be named among the nation’s ‘bright spots’ within the Hispanic community,” said Oscar Mejias, HITEP CEO. “Our staff works hard every day to help the underserved population in our community to better their lives, become educated and go on to achieve great things. This is a tremendous honor for all of us and serves to reinforce our commitment to our students.”

The announcement was made by Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Initiative, on September 15th at the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month and in honor of the Initiative’s 25th anniversary in Washington, DC. The Initiative was established in 1990 to address the educational disparities faced by the Hispanic community. “There has been notable progress in Hispanic educational achievement, and it is due to the efforts of these Bright Spots in Hispanic education, programs and organizations working throughout the country to help Hispanic students reach their full potential,” said Ceja.

HITEP was one of six institutions in New England, whose nomination was accepted for recognition through the Initiative’s Anniversary Year of Action, and the only company in Rhode Island. There was three designees in Massachusetts and two designees in Connecticut. The full list can be accessed here: www.ed.gov/HispanicInitiative.
