WESTERLY, RI – Downtown Westerly, RI is undergoing a complete paint make-over at dozens of local businesses, courtesy of a contest that took place between 840 communities in the Northeast. Westerly was one of 20 towns in the US and Canada, and the only town in RI or CT, to win the competition which garnered thousands of internet votes from communities vying for the ultimate prize of a Main Street makeover. Last summer, the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce spearheaded the local campaign to put Westerly in the winners circle. The aggressive campaign to rally votes included visits to local businesses, email campaigns, Facebook posts, special event announcements, and nightly visits to local pubs and restaurants where announcements were made asking those in attendance to “vote bomb” the Main Street Matters site so Westerly would win. “All of our efforts paid off and now downtown Westerly is benefitting from this tremendous gift” said Lisa Konicki, the Chamber’s Executive Director who put the ceremonial first stroke of paint on a building yesterday, and also cut the 8 foot long cake that replicates the downtown district being transformed.
A team of professional painters descended upon Westerly last week to start the project which is expected to last another 3 weeks. A complete project outline is attached.
A kick-off celebration was held last night and those photos are available via link below. Photos taken by Joshua Behan Photography
