Governor Chafee to Introduce New Gloria Gemma Foundation Rhode Island License Plate

PAWTUCKET, RI – (October 3, 2012) Today, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee will join the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation to introduce a new state license plate designed to raise breast cancer awareness and support the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Women’s Cancer Screening Program (WCSP).  Senator M. Teresa Paiva Weed and Representative Thomas Winfield, sponsors of the license plate, will also be in attendance.

Event: Introduction of New State License Plate

When:  Wednesday, October 3 @ 4:45pm

Where: State House, 2nd floor- Governor’s Reception Room

The announcement, which is open to the public, is timed to mark the beginning of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The pink plate costs $41.50. While $21.50 will fund the plate’s production, $20.00 from each plate sold will be donated to the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Women’s Cancer Screening Program (WCSP), which expands access to mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women between the ages of 40 and 49. The WCSP is a frequent recipient of Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation support. During the last two years alone, the Foundation donated $50,000 to the WCSP.

“These license plates look beautiful,” said Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation Executive Director Maria Gemma. “They’re a great way for Rhode Islanders to get their pink on and, more importantly, help support crucial early detection, which can save lives.”

Gemma added, “But we can’t do it without some enthusiastic interest this month,” referring to the 900 orders required to make the plate official. “October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month but for us, breast cancer is a yearlong job. This license plate will help us stay on people’s minds all year long.”

Meanwhile, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation team is hard at work planning the 7th Annual Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™, the largest breast cancer awareness event in the Northeast. Downtown Providence will be the pinkest place on the planet this weekend—October 5, 6, and 7—as more than 100,000 Rhode Islanders take in educational exhibits, health screenings, food, arts, crafts, music, shopping, and lots of family fun. The focus of this year’s event, “Breast cancer is not just your grandmother’s disease,” is designed to highlight the new, younger face of the illness.
