Four-Star Ratings Awarded to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Medicare Advantage Plans

PROVIDENCE, RI – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) announced that all five of its BlueCHiP for Medicare Advantage plans received a 4.0 Star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) for 2014, an increase of half of a point over last year and BCBSRI’s highest ratings since CMS implemented the Star system in 2007.

Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-Star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.  The Five-Star Quality Rating System was designed by CMS to help consumers objectively compare Medicare health plans. CMS assigns Star Ratings from one to five, with five being the highest, to Medicare Advantage plans based on clinical measures, customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
“We are honored to be able to deliver benefits to our customers through our Medicare Advantage products. It’s a very important responsibility,” said William Wray, Chief Operating Officer for BCBSRI, who oversees the company’s senior products businesses. “The increase in our Star ratings resulted from a lot of work by our dedicated employees, who are Rhode Islanders serving Rhode Islanders. We hope this makes it clear that we want to be the plan of choice for the state’s seniors, now and in the future.”
