Fifth Annual Adopt A Doctor Art Auction to Raise Funds for Doctors in Africa

December 10, 2012 [Providence] Adopt A Doctor, an international 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Providence, is hosting its fifth annual art auction Thursday, December 20th at 5:00 p.m. at Metro Cafe (101 Dyer Street) in downtown Providence. All proceeds will provide financial support to 18 medical doctors in four of the world’s poorest African nations.

Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Robb Dimmick, well-known educator, director, and actor will serve as auctioneer for the event. Numerous donors, galleries, and artists throughout New England have donated artwork to be auctioned.

Along with over 40 works of art, auction-goers will have the opportunity to bid on items such as the oil on canvas painting Salt Pond Mist by Anthony Tomaselli, a t-shirt signed by electronic producer/DJ Bassnectar, a signed photograph of famed actor Matthew McConaughey, and dinners-for-two at favorite Rhode Island restaurants. The event will also showcase the technological prowess of two Rhode Island universities. Director of RISD Museum of Art John Smith will attend the event via a robotic avatar from Brown University’s robotics lab.

Ray Rickman, founder and president of Adopt A Doctor, stated, “Nearly 5,000 lives are saved annually from the presence of our medical doctors practicing in four of the world’s poorest nations.”

“Our art auctions create goodwill and empower individuals to make positive global impact,” continued Rickman. “Not only will auction-goers have the opportunity of adding to their collections, they will have the satisfaction of knowing that every dollar spent translates to lives being saved.”

Adopt A Doctor strives to encourage doctors to stay where they are needed the most. Adopt A Doctor was established in 2003 to supplement the salaries of medical doctors in Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Malawi. Each of these countries have fewer medical doctors than almost any other nation in the world. Currently, AAD supports 18 doctors. Adopt A Doctor doubles the salaries of physicians on the condition that they remain practicing medicine in their countries for at least seven years.
