Boy Scouts to Honor GTECH President and CEO Jaymin B. Patel, and the late Edward J. Cooney at Annual Distinguished Citizens Award Luncheon

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, will hold its Annual Distinguished Citizens Award Luncheon on June 13th, at The Omni in Providence. The Council will recognize Jaymin B. Patel, President and CEO of GTECH Corporation, and the late Edward J. Cooney with this year’s Senator John H. Chafee Distinguished Citizens Award.

Edward J. Cooney, who was Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Nortek, passed away on March 20, 2013 at the age of 65.

“Every year, as a Council we recognize community leaders whose accomplishments and lives personify the Scouting principles and values,” said John Mosby, Narragansett Council’s Scout Executive/CEO. “The recipients this year have both served as role models for our community and our youth.”

The Distinguished Citizens Award is named in honor of the late Senator John H. Chafee. A Scout in his youth and a distinguished Narragansett Council alumnus, Sen. Chafee kept a copy of the Scout Handbook on his Senate office desk until the day he died.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Narragansett Council’s Urban Scouting Program; funds will aid nearly 1,300 at-risk youth enrolled in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting. The Council will use the funds to provide paid staff to serve as Cubmasters and Scoutmasters, uniforms, registration, insurance, program supplies, equipment, and summer camp scholarships.

Paul J. Choquette, Vice Chairman of Gilbane, Inc. will chair the luncheon.
