BankRI Grant to Community Care Alliance in Woonsocket to Provide Basic Needs Packages to Homeless Shelter Residents

PROVIDENCE, RI – On July 1, Family Resources Community Action and NRI Community Services officially joined forces, merging to become Community Care Alliance and integrating services to better meet the needs of those they serve. A unique venture, the two long-time Woonsocket agencies now combine a state licensed community mental health center with a community action program (CAP) agency and a family service agency.

To help support the organization’s life-changing work, Bank Rhode Island (BankRI) announced today that it has awarded Community Care Alliance a $2,500 charitable grant to help provide personal care items to new residents of the Woonsocket Shelter. The grant will also support the creation of “Moving into New Home” packages for individuals and families transitioning to permanent housing.

“This grant from BankRI will help ensure residents have basic supplies while living in the shelter, and will help ease the stress for families moving to permanent housing by providing them with personal items they need as they take steps toward independent living,” said Darlene Cowan, Director of Transitional Housing & HIV Support Services at Community Care Alliance. “We greatly appreciate BankRI’s generous support.”

For more than 25 years, the Woonsocket Shelter has provided emergency shelter and support services to Northern Rhode Island’s most vulnerable individuals and families. Last year alone, the shelter provided more than 22,000 bed nights to 203 individuals, of which 107 were children.

In addition to addressing emergency housing needs, case managers work closely with clients to identify and address their basic needs of food, healthcare, medication and clothing. Referrals to employment and job-training programs, as well as access to after school and summer learning programs for children are also available. In total, Community Care Alliance annually serves an estimated 15,000 individuals through more than 50 programs and community-wide resources.

“Community Care Alliance is an invaluable human services agency for residents of Woonsocket and Northern Rhode Island who face challenges meeting their basic needs,” said Mark J. Meiklejohn, President and CEO of BankRI. “BankRI is proud to support their work to help our neighbors overcome homelessness and transition to permanent housing, which leads not only to self-sufficiency, but improved quality of life.”
