WESTERLY, RI – Washington Trust President & COO Edward O. (Ned) Handy and Elizabeth B. Eckel, Washington Trust Sr. Vice President of Marketing, recently presented a $5,000 check to Mary Roda, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County (DVRCSC), on behalf of The Washington Trust Charitable Foundation.
Bank officials also presented more than 150 used cell-phones that were donated by the community and bank employees as part of the Bank’s annual cell-phone recycling campaign to collect phones that Center clients can use in emergency situations. The phones provide a sense of safety and security—knowing that 911 is at a client’s fingertips should they need help. The remaining phones are sent to a company that reconditions them or uses what parts they can and in turn provides funds from each phone to the DVRCSC. Since 2001, Washington Trust’s collection efforts have enabled the DVRCSC to receive more than $20,000 in funds from the recycled phones.
“Partnerships like we have with the DVRCSC allow Washington Trust to give back to the community by supporting the very people who work tirelessly to offer safety, advocacy, education and critical services to those in need,” says Handy.
The DVRCSC is a nonprofit agency that works toward a future free of violence, and to build a community in which each individual shares the responsibility to create a culture of safety and personal dignity.
“The Washington Trust Company has been a loyal supporter of the DVRCSC for many years, from leadership on our Board of Directors, program support from the WTC Charitable Foundation, an annual cell phone collection campaign and lead sponsorship of our flagship event, which Deb Gormley, Washington Trust Sr. Vice President of Retail Banking is chairing this October for the second year in a row,” explains Mary Roda, Executive Director of the DVRCSC.
