PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Art & Design Film Festival is a four day curated film series focused on the diverse disciplines within art and design, to take place October 29thNovember 1st, 2015. The festival films will showcase artists, designers, craftspeople, collectors, curators and makers of all kinds from around the world while entertaining, educating and reflecting on the influence art and design have on history, community, politics, personal expression and our contemporary landscape. The festival is one-of-a-kind and will be held at the RISD Museum and the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, Rhode Island

Over 20 films from 13 countries are featured in this year’s inaugural festival, highlighting the incredible reach art and design have around the globe. The diverse selections include Afripedia, a short film about emerging artists in Ghana; Tomorrow We Disappear, the story of an artist colony in India threatened by a large development; Sneakerheadz, an entertaining look at sneaker design and collecting culture; Maker, a documentary on the Maker movement and Saving Mes Aynak, following the race to save a 5,000 year old archaeological site in Afghanistan from mining interests. Most films will be followed by a panel discussion with directors, featured guests, and members of the academic community to further encourage discussion and exploration of each topic.

This project has been made possible by the Rhode Island Innovation Fellowship, a program at the Rhode Island Foundation funded by John and Letitia Carter. Other partners and sponsors include: RINPR, Campus Fine Wines, The Dean Hotel, Ocean State Oyster Festival, Providence Monthly, DesignAgency, Adam Edelsberg 20th Century Art & Design, Poor Morgan Screenprinting, Rachel Hulin Photography, Stephanie Alvarez Ewens Photography, and Josephine Sittenfeld Photography.

The Providence Art & Design Film Festival is the first program created by The Providence Center for Media Culture (PCMC), a newly formed nonprofit organization. It is the concept of husband and wife team Daniel Kamil and Emily Steffian, recipients of the 2015 Rhode Island Innovation Fellowship and owners of the Cable Car Cinema. They believed that Providence, as the self-professed Creative Capital, was the perfect location to host a film festival dedicated to art and design. An integral part of their fellowship proposal was to create PCMC as a place for diverse and underrepresented voices while enhancing Rhode Island’s reputation as a cultural innovator.

The opening night reception features a screening of Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s film Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict. A Q & A with Vreeland, moderated by John W. Smith, Director of The RISD Museum will immediately follow the film. Tickets are $25 for opening night reception and film, held at the RISD Museum, Metcalf Auditorium.

The festival (with exception of opening night) will be held at the Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main St, Providence, RI 02903. Ticket prices are $10 adults, $7.50 seniors and students. All tickets can be purchased online in advance or in person at the Cable Car Cinema.
