New England Institute of Technology to Host First® Tech Challenge

WARWICK, RI – The competition heats up as 33 Rhode Island middle and high school teams showcase their creativity and skill through their custom-designed robots.

WHAT:  For the ninth year, New England Institute of Technology will serve as Rhode Island’s FIRST®  Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner.  Founded in 1989 by accomplished inventor, Dean Kamen,FIRST®   (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), was designed to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in students through the use of robotics.

WHO: Elected Officials (Governor Gina Raimondo, Congressman James Langevin, and Congressman David Cicilline), Volunteers from the Rhode Island business community, New England Institute of Technology faculty and staff

WHY: FIRST®  creates accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Students learn how to design, build and program an original robot for competition against other teams using a sports model. For more information, visitwww.usfirst.org.

Volunteers from various industries throughout Rhode Island become partners in education by mentoring students to develop problem solving, critical thinking and innovative reasoning skills that are necessary to be successful in STEM careers.
