Johnson & Wales University Announces Reopening of the Culinary Arts Museum, Newest Exhibit: “Sweet Success”

PROVIDENCE, RI —  On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Culinary Arts Museum (CAM) will reopen in its present location on the Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Harborside Campus in Providence.

During the last twelve months, museum staff members and JWU student assistants, along with four temporary spets, inventoried and rehoused the museum’s holdings. The main goal of this phase was to assess how these artifacts could enhance and complement the JWU curriculum on all of its four campuses (Providence, RI; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, NC).

The museum will reopen with a learning area called the CAM Teaching Lab, where the public may observe classes at work on research projects. Curious visitors can learn firsthand what some of the student curriculum is like at JWU. The museum has reinvented itself to be part exhibit space as well as another resource for culinary students. When classes are not in session at the museum, visitors can browse the gallery-style setup and see examples of student lab work, as well as the materials students are using to learn.

In addition, the museum’s collections database has been made available online, www.culinary.org. As items continue to be catalogued, they will be added to this searchable database.

Beginning on Sept. 2 a new exhibit titled “Sweet Success” will be on display. The focus here will be on the Agora Ice Cream Parlor, an 1896 New York landmark; the Salois Dairy, a 20th century family business that operated in Pawtucket; and Sweenor’s Chocolates, a Rhode Island company that has been run by the Sweenor family for four generations. Other ice cream, soda fountain, and candy-related artifacts discovered during our inventory project will be included in this exhibition.

The museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is as follows: adults, $7.00; senior citizens (62+), $6.00; children over five years old, $2.00; children under five are free; college students with valid ID,  $4.00.
