PROVIDENCE, RI – Save The Bay is pleased to announce the appointment of Joan Abrams as Major Gifts Officer.

Abrams has a long history of dedicated volunteer involvement with Save The Bay. She is a former president of its board and a member of its leadership council. She brings with her a proven track record in fundraising and philanthropic development. Under Abrams’ leadership as capital campaign co-chair, Save The Bay raised $11 million in 2005 to restore Fields Point and build the Save The Bay Center on what had formerly been a city dump. In her new position, she will reinforce the organization’s efforts to strengthen long-term relationships with donors and increase philanthropic support for its mission to protect and improve Narragansett Bay.

Throughout her career, Abrams has provided marketing and communications services to technology, jewelry, healthcare, education and non-profit industries. Her strong understanding of strategic marketing, her passion for education and the environment, and her personal commitment to making a difference have allowed her to excel in fundraising, most recently at the Community College of Rhode Island. From 1998-2014, she was a professor and the director of the Master’s in Communications Management Degree Program at Simmons College in Boston, where she effectively increased enrollment by 25 percent and developed alumni, service learning and hybrid online programs. Abrams has an undergraduate degree from Simmons College and graduate degrees from Simmons College and Harvard University.

“We are delighted to have Joan join the team,” said Jonathan Stone, executive director at Save The Bay. “Our donors make such an impact on the health of the Bay by providing Save The Bay with the resources necessary to defend the public trust. Joan and I look forward to engaging our donors in ways that meet their philanthropic goals and enhance our ability to fulfill our mission.”
