February is all about Seals at Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium

PROVIDENCE, RI – The February theme at Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium is seals. That means that visitors can engage with Aquarium staff and volunteers in seal-related coloring and craft activities, story time, a creature feature, and even seal yoga. Families can also meet Sealia (think Celia), a full-sized, true-to-life interactive seal model, and view exhibits with more than 50 species that co-habitate with seal in Narragansett Bay.

“This is the month when Newport’s Winter Festival overlaps with February vacation for many school children, and the aquarium welcomes lots of marine loving visitors and families looking for something to get them out of the house,” said Isaac Lavoie, Exploration Center manager. “This is such an exciting month at the Exploration Center, with crowds similar to summertime, so we’re doubling-down on volunteers and making sure everything is tip-top to welcome our guests,” he said.

The seal theme is also fitting for February because this is the perfect time to spot harbor seals resting on the rocks of Narragansett Bay, according to Save The Bay Boat Captain Eric Pfirrmann. Save The Bay offers seal watch boat cruises every Saturday and Sunday through April, including two special two-hour cruises that include Rose Island Lightouse tours, during Winterfest weekend, Feburary 14 and 15.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. between February 13 and 22, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the rest of February and through Memorial Day Weekend. Admission to the Exploration Center and Aquarium is just $6 per person, and children aged three and under are free. Family memberships are also available as an economical way for a large family to enjoy unlimited visits to the Center for a full year.
