Sociocracy means self-governance by those who work together. Sociocracy brings consensus to scale and is more inclusive than majority rule democracy. Sociocracy can transform traditional frameworks of ownership, compensation and leadership selection, and can be implemented in all kinds and sizes of organizations – traditional businesses, nonprofits, cooperatives, ESOPs, and community organizations.

In this presentation we will cover the basic principles of Sociocracy:

  1. Decision making by consent
  2. Organizational structure with authority distributed to teams of people (called “Circles”)
  3. Continual adaptation

Sociocracy matches internal organizational practice with values of effectiveness, transparency and egalitarianism – “power-with,” not power-over or power-under.

This presentation is for all: cooperators, activists, investors, entrepreneurs, for-profit and nonprofit staff and board members. We will share some stories of implementing Sociocracy and we will have time for questions and answers.

The presenter of this workshop, Jerry Koch-Gonzalez, is the CEO of The Sociocracy Consulting Group and director of Sociocracy For All, a project of the nonprofit Institute for Peaceable Communities. Jerry lives in a cohousing community in Amherst MA operating on Sociocracy.
