City Celebrates PARK(ing) Day with “Parklet” Installations Across Providence. Almost Three Dozen Miniature Public Parks Pop Up to Promote Benefits of Green Space

PROVIDENCE, RI – The City of Providence today celebrated PARK(ing) Day with the installation of almost three dozen of temporary, miniature public parks known as “parklets” in parking spaces across the City.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, activists, and citizens independently turn metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces – temporary public parks and other spaces for people to enjoy. PARK(ing) Day is intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, social interaction, generosity and play.

“As we work to build a more bike- and pedestrian-friendly city, PARK(ing) Day Providence helps us reimagine our urban spaces and is a celebration of the tremendous creativity we have in our Capital City,” said Mayor Angel Taveras.

This year, PARK(ing) Day Providence includes 32 parklets sponsored by organizations and businesses in Downtown, the West Side, and the East Side and a temporary protected bike lane on Broadway. Maps are available online of participating locations Downtown and on the West Side.

PARK(ing) Day Providence is sponsored by the City of Providence, the Downtown Improvement District and the West Broadway Neighborhood Association. Learn more about PARK(ing) Day at http://parkingday.org.
