East Providence—Big Brothers of Rhode Island named radio hall of famer Steve Kass as Executive Director of its organization in the announcement made today by the President of the Board of Directors, Joseph Manera, Jr. Esq. Kass becomes the sixth person appointed to the position just as the organization begins to celebrate its sixty year history announced Big Brothers President, Joseph Manera Jr., Esq.
Kass will be heading up the organization that his father, George Katz was first appointed to in 1952 . Previously, Kass was a radio and TV talk show host for more than 30 years, and left the broadcast industry to become Governor Donald Carcieri’s Director of Communications, from 2005 to 2008 then became the director of communications for the Rhode Island Emergency Management Association, from 2008 to 2011.
“This is the right time to re-structure and re-position Big Brothers to meet the challenges of today,” according to Manera. “Steve brings both the rich sense of our history combined with the skills and experience we need to really support our critical mission: providing positive role models for boys aged 8-16.”
In response to his appointment, Kass commented, “I’m honored to have an opportunity to advance the work my father did, and the ideals he championed when he first lead Big Brothers of RI, and then, later was called to grow Big Brothers nationally and internationally. Of course, this connects with me on a personal level, too.”
Responding to the personal and organizational challenges presented, he continued, “at this point in my career, this new challenge taps all of my professional skills. More importantly, the challenge itself is both demanding and compelling, and I welcome it.
Both the president of the board and the incoming executive director agreed on one critical issue: the need for the Big Brother mission, to provide a positive male role model to our State’s boys has never been greater. Manera noted, “In 1952, during George Katz’s tenure in RI, the number of boys without a father was relatively small. The number of young boys not celebrating Father’s Days this year in RI is unprecedented.”
Steve Kass will announce the revitalized association’s initial plans in the next few weeks.
